Sewing a Jedi outfit

Voor ons scouting weekend in Star Wars thema maakte ik ook een Jedi-pak (klik voor mijn andere Star Wars projecten op het label 'Star Wars aan de rechterkant). Ik zocht online naar een patroon en vond er een voor kinderen. Ik ging er vanuit dat 1,5 meter stofbreedte te smal zou zijn voor een volwassen versie en rekende erop de mouwen los te moeten maken, maar toen ik het stuk stof met hoofdgat over mijn schouders had hangen, bleek het net te gaan. Met deze methode red je het met 4 meter stof, als je echt mooi lange mouwen wilt, zou ik er een metertje bij kopen.

Ik volgde dus de tutorial en ging op de stof liggen om in te schatten hoe de mouwen ongeveer moesten lopen. Vervolgens naaide ik de zijkanten dicht en knipte de voorkant doormidden (de stof had daar precies een vouw, dus dat was een makkie), maakte daar twee smalle rolzoompjes en aan de onderkant een mooie brede zoom. Aan de mouwen liet ik de zelfkant zitten.

For our Star Wars themed scouts' weekend I also made a Jedi outfit (for my other Star Wars projects, click the 'Star Wars' label on the right). I searched online for a pattern and found one for kids. I assumed 1,5m fabric width wouldn't be enough for adult sized sleeves, but when I had the fabric with neck hole over my shoulders, it turned out to be just wide enough. With this method 4m of fabric is enough, but if you want real nice and long sleeves, I'd buy a meter more.

So I followed the tutorial and layed down on the fabric to estimate how to cut the sleeves. Next I sewed the sides together and cut the front in two (there was a fold in the fabric exactly in the middle, so that was easy), finished that off with two small roll hems and made a nice broad hem at the bottom. I simply left the selvage on the sleeves.

De laatste stap voor de mantel was de capuchon. Ik hield een stuk stof over mijn hoofd om te bepalen hoe hoog hij ongeveer moest zijn en knipte vervolgens een vierkant van die lengte. Ik naaide het dicht met een ronding in de hoek en sloeg een brede rand om aan de voorkant, die ik vastnaaide. Met een paar plooitjes zette ik de capuchon tenslotte aan de mantel. Erg mooi is dat qua afwerking niet, want de binnenkant van de capuchon is zichtbaar als je hem niet opzet. Maar het is maar verkleedkleding en ik had haast, dus ik knipte de randjes een beetje recht en basta.

The last step for the cloak was the hood. I held a piece of fabric over my head to figure out how high it should be and then cut a square of that size. I sewed it with a curve in the corner and folded back a broad rim and sewed it onto the hood. With a couple of folds I attached the hood to the cloak. This isn't quite a perfect finishing, as the inside of the hood shows when you wear it down. But it's only a dress up costume and I was in a hurry, so I just cut the edges straight and that was that. 














Voor de Jedi-tuniek gebruikte ik twee stroken die over de schouders gaan en met een riem bijeen worden gehouden. Dit idee vond ik ook op internet. Ik nam een meter wat stuggere beige stof en knipte hem doormidden, zodat ik twee stukken van 50cm bij 1,5m had. Die naaide ik dubbel, draaide ze met de goede kant naar buiten en stikte ze door langs beide zijkanten. Zonder mantel zakken de stroken meteen van je schouders af, maar zolang je je mantel aan houdt, lijkt het net echt!

For the Jedi tunic I used two strips of fabric that are hung over the shoulders and kept together with a belt. I found this idea on the internet too. I took a meter of a bit thicker beige fabric and cut it in half into two pieces of 50cm by 1,5m. I sewed these into two tubes, turned the right sides out and sewed along both edges. Without the cloak the strips immediately fall off your shoulders, but as long as you keep the cloak on, it looks pretty real!

Tot mijn teleurstelling bleek 'een Jedi' geen gevraagde figuur in het spel, maar Yoda speelde wel een hoofdrol en heeft mijn mantel veel gedragen. Ik poseerde zelf maar even als Jedi.

I was dissappointed 'a Jedi' turned out not to be one of the characters in the game, but Yoda did play a big part and wore my cloak a lot. I took it on me myself to model as a Jedi.
